The Thirty Third Annual Meeting of the Synod of the Diocese of the Northeast was hosted by St Matthias Anglican Church in Old Mystic, CT.
Prefaced by a short Clericus on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, Synod convened on Thursday afternoon NOV 1st with both the House of Clergy and Laity present from the representative Parishes of the Northeast Diocese of the Anglican Church in America.
With a Diocesan theme of "The Heart of the Parish" this 33rd Synod engaged both Clergy and Laity with a message of renewal and intentionality. Topics covered included Spiritual Warfare, Missions, and Spiritual Formation in the local Parish. Speakers included, Bishop Webb, Canon Missioner Mirabile, Archdeacon Perkins, Canon to the Ordinary Mathias, and Rev Dr. Kevin Holsapple.
Details of of note; A new Mission has been launched in Belchertown MA by Bishop Marsh and Fr Stockton (St Barnabas) is actively meeting on Saturday evenings and has begun to attract new Parishioners with a committed core of about 12 people. The Legacy Fund has been initiated by the Canon Missioner and Canon to the Ordinary for the formation of a funding arm of the DNE for long-term growth of new Parishes and recruitment of Clergy. Canon Ihde (director of the IAF - International Anglican Fellowship) reported on the disbursements and budgets for 2024 including a highlight on the urgent need to fund Parishes affected by the Hurricanes in North Carolina, Florida, and Georgia.
The IAF 2024 Report is available.
Bishop Webb noted the mission focus from the 2023 Synod was well received and the Diocese has been growing with the announcement of launch of St Barnabas and reports of multiple Parishes reporting the 20% growth mandate to be locally successfully in 2024.
The 2024 Operating Budget and key appointments were kept in order this year as Dcn Bryan Dench has been named Chancellor of the Diocese and an updated roster to serve on the Standing committee was approved in the business session of the Synod. Details of the upcoming TAC Synod (Traditional Anglican Church) were noted for May 2025 in Georgia and delegates were named to represent the Diocese.
Next years (2025) Synod location and dates are pending and expected to be announced in January of 2025. Special thanks to Archdeacon Perkins and his local volunteers for their behind-the-scenes hard work to host and arrange for the necessary food and services required to have both the Clericus and Synod this year.
